We Work Labs: Matt Shampine

Matt is one of the co-founders of WeWork Labs, a community for early stage startups with locations in New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. WeWork Labs is home to over 400 entrepreneurs representing over 200 startups and current partners include PepsiCo, Microsoft, WilmerHale, and TriNet.He previously ran Business Development and Marketing at Hometalk where he helped grow the company to over 1 million visitors with 480K+ Facebook fans and 30K+ Pinterest followers and established partnerships with companies such as Lowe’s, DBG, Apartment Therapy, and Scripps in four months. Prior to Hometalk, Matt was one of the co-founders of the angel-backed New York startup Onepager. Before Matt started Onepager, he co-founded the design agency Simande where his responsibilities included business development, client relations, and project management. Clients ranged from organizations such as NYTM, RRE, Vogue, Columbia University, and Tommy Hilfiger to various startups in need of product design.Matt graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science from The College of New Jersey in 2005 and attended graduate school at Drexel University. He is an advisor to five startups including Coffee Meets Bagel, Dealburner (acquired), ToutApp, Consmr, andHandshake. Before Matt jumped into the startup world in New York City, he was a senior web developer at Mercedes-Benz USA. He has also held a number of elected positions and ran for Township Council in Palmyra, NJ in 2007.

Q&A With Matt

Why are you an entrepreneur?

There is a shift in the way our generation works, and we want to help lead that change.  I love the fact that we’re in a position to serve and help entrepreneurs throughout the country succeed.

What can a fellow learn from you?

We treat WeWork Labs as a work in progress.  We love trying new things, bringing in new people, and being innovative in how our offering to our members.  The job will be a mix of sales, business development, marketing, relationship management, project management, and event coordinating.

What will your fellow be exposed to?

Work with current sponsors (Pepsi, Microsoft, WilmerHale, TriNet), event / meetup / skillshare / class planning, new partner outreach, support with member startups.

What do you expect out of a fellow?

Willing and open to trying new things, loves meeting a lot of people and up for doing the work that has to be done.

What makes your startup unique?

We are the largest community of early stage tech startups in the country with locations in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
